The country's 24th largest state by land size, and 9th largest in population, Georgia is known as the producer of the Three Ps--peaches, pecans and peanuts. With its mild humid-subtropical climate, it's also known for producing great music and is sometimes called the Empire State of the South. Georgia occupies an area of 59,441 square miles and has three major rivers: the Savannah River, the Suwannee and the Chattahoochee.

The great state of Georgia has many great cities and businesses dotting its landscape.  Larger cities include Atlanta and Macon, while smaller cities inlclude Marietta and more.  You can find everythingin most cities, ranging from movers in Marietta Georgia to the many recording studies of Atlanta.

After Native Americans, the land of Georgia was owned by Spain and England, who fought over it in the latter part of the 17th century. The Spanish rule was halted in the beginning of the 18th century. The last of the original 13 colonies to be settled, Georgia was also the last to rejoin the Union in 1870 after the Civil War ended.

In a map of Georgia, you can see that the state is almost nearly square. At the top west, it's neighbored on the north by the states of Tennessee and North Carolina, in the west by South Carolina, to the south by Florida and to the west by Alabama. The state is also bordered to a small degree by the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Georgia is Atlanta, and you can find it on a map of Georgia in the upper-west portion of the state.

Brief City Guide

Notable cities in Georgia include Savannah, Macon, Athens and Dalton. Savannah was the first state capital, and it is a popular destination site due to its shopping opportunities, historical buildings and architecture. Macon is in the center of the state on the map of Georgia and was once home to the Creek Indians. A lot of great music has come out of Macon, including the artists Otis Redding, Little Richard, two members of the band R.E.M. and Randy Crawford.

Located in the upper-west portion of the map of Georgia, is Athens, a lively college town. It features bars, musical acts, coffee shops and an independent publishing company. Notable bands and musicians that have sprung from Athens include R.E.M., Mathew Sweet, Indigo Girls, The Whigs and Neutral Milk Hotel. The city has so many famous natives and residents, it's too long a list to run, but a few include actor Jeff Daniels, football player Andy Johnson and some of the founding members of the band The B-52s.

Dalton, Georgia is situated in the western portion of the state, and can be seen on the map of Georgia in the farthest left corner. The city is filled with landmarks from the Civil War and historic homes. It's also known as the "Carpet Capital of the World," and you may recognize the moniker from carpeting ads and commercials. There are more than 150 carpet makers and almost as many outlet stores.
